Giant earthworms are nocturnal creatures, spending their days in permanent burrows up to three meters below the soil. They only come to the surface at night and during heavy rains when the soil is saturated. This makes it challenging to gather evidence and documentation, which is required for the official recognition of a new species under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
The environment of South Australia plays a role in the worms' elusiveness. The state's arid climate has historically been considered depauperate in terms of earthworm populations. However, the recent heavy rains could provide an opportunity for more daytime sightings as the soil becomes saturated. Messenger suggests that there may be countless giant worms in Australia, and their discovery could be a matter of better observation and documentation.
Despite her extensive knowledge and interest in these worms, Messenger has no plans to pursue academic recognition. She values the intrinsic value of these creatures and finds them exciting, preferring to appreciate their existence rather than preserve and describe them formally.
